Save the Children is there

Save the Children has been working in the Middle East since 1949. Save the Children is one of the biggest NGOs in the area, and an independent organisation with ongoing programmes in both Gaza, the West Bank and Israel. During the outbreaks of violence, Save the Children’s staff in Gaza provided essential food parcels, blankets and shelter to children and families within 72 hours of the crisis.

As of 10 March 2009 they have reached 82,554 people (including 46,230 children) with life saving food, water and healthcare, and provided four hospitals with medical equipment to treat injured and traumatised children.

Now that a ceasefire is in place, Save the Children are determined to reach a minimum of 150,000 people, including at least 75,000 children. Over the next six months, they will build on their existing expertise in Gaza and dramatically scale-up their work to meet children’s immediate needs, as well as helping them to recover in the long-term and overcome this traumatic ordeal.

Save the Children will continue to:

  • provide vulnerable families with food, clean water, and essential household items such as blankets and cooking pots;
  • improve access to clean water and sanitation;
  • improve healthcare for children and women;
  • support children to return to school,
  • provide cash support and cash for work schemes to ensure families can earn a living and
  • ensure the psychosocial needs of beneficiaries in its programmes are addressed

As the ceasefire is now in place, Save the Children has the vital opportunity to scale-up their response in Gaza and reach thousands more vulnerable children and their families.

With your support, we can make a dramatic difference to children, enabling them to cope with the trauma they have experienced and rebuild their lives.
